Given a challenging net zero goal that must be completed in 24 months from start of design to move in, what do you do first?

Mohawk College is a leader in sustainability, and the broader community. The college’s new Joyce Centre for Partnership and Innovation is a Canadian pilot project for the CaGBC Zero Carbon Buildings and targeting net zero energy performance. The project, led by a team of expert consultants including mcCallumSather and B+H Architects, and RDH Building Science, has been driven by a net zero energy budget that the college has set. The project has already garnered national attention including that of The Joyce Family Foundation and a number of awards.

The project design team was hired in May 2016, construction started in October 2016, and was completed in August 2018. This presentation will demonstrate how the project team navigated the challenges the mandate within an accelerated schedule to qualify for the federal government’s funding deadline.

Challenges and their solutions that will be presented will include:

  1. The wall must be redesigned to meet the construction schedule. Can you make curtainwall work?
  2. Too much to do; incorporating design assist.
  3. How much PV is needed and where will it be installed?
  4. We have a café? How much more PV will that need?

This presentation will discuss the goal, the early design decisions that were made, the solution that is being constructed and how on-going measurements will allow for corrective action and verification of the building performance. The total carbon intensity of the building will also be discussed, both the embodied carbon emissions and the operating carbon emissions; within the context of the expected lifetime of the building.

Speakers:
Steve Kemp, M.A.Sc., P.Eng, LEED® Fellow Principal, Senior Energy and Sustainability Specialist RDH Building Science Inc.

Kevin Stelzer BES, BArch, OAA, MRAIC, LEEP AP BD+C, BSS Principal, ENFORM Architects Inc.
