Building Science 101

Building Science 101 Building science is an interdisciplinary field that focuses on the analysis and control of the physical phenomena affecting buildings and architecture. Since its inception, it has rapidly positioned itself as an indispensable discipline in the realm of construction. Moreover, Canada’s harsh climate, ever‐rising energy costs and the demand for sustainable, energy‐efficient buildings make building science more relevant than ever today.
This presentation will serve as a general summary review of the subject and will be encompassing in nature. It will cover topics such as (1) the evolution of the science, (2) sources of information on the topic, (3) the importance of applied science practitioners, (4) educational opportunities in the field, (5) general relationships between mechanical systems and the building envelope and (6) wall design details.
Learning Objectives: At the end of this presentation, participants should be able to:
- Understand the importance of building science
- Identify key building science influencers
- Identify key information sources on the subject, and know where to locate them
- Understand the relationship between the building envelope, climate and mechanical systems
- Understand key aspects of detailing the building envelope (e.g. Foundations, Walls, and Roofs)
- Understand trends and changes in building envelope design
Paul is a graduate of the University of Toronto, Building Science Program 02 as well as the Architectural Design Technology Program at Humber College 89. He is registered with the Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists as an Applied Science Technologist 95 (currently converting to CET), and with the Ontario Building Envelope Council as a Building Science Specialist Ontario 04. Paul was an Adjunct Professor at Humber College and has taught in the Architectural Design Technology and Construction Project Management programs for over 10yrs. Paul is currently a Director at RCI – Ontario Chapter and is a Past President of the Ontario Building Envelope Council 08/09 where he resided on the Board of Directors from 2004 until 2010.
