EnerPHit Airtightness & Moisture Control: Robust and simple solutions for low-leak no-mould retrofit projects

Achieving the stringent airtightness requirements in Passive House retrofit projects is a major challenge, and must be achieved without putting the building and its occupants at risk due to moisture damage derived from condensation and/or mould growth. Improving quality and reducing risk of failure is the key if EnerPHit uptake is to speed up to the levels required for mitigating extended climate chaos. The seminar presents the airtightness and moisture control strategy and its execution in an EnerPHit retrofit of a historic building in Barcelona, resulting in very low air infiltration rates in the preliminary airtightness tests.
Oliver Style is a Master of Science in Architecture and Advanced Environmental Studies from the University of East London, certified Passivhaus consultant and component certifier, and co-founder and Director of Praxis Resilient Buildings. Specialised in “fabric-first” building performance optimisation, thermal envelope design, transient hygrothermal risk analysis with WUFI, thermodynamic modelling with EnergyPlus, 2D and 3D thermal bridge calculation, and HVAC system design and specification.

HVAC Leads, Enclosure Follows? Examining the integrated approach to Passive House design

What is the easiest way to approach the design of Passive House Building? This presentation will explore the interdependence of enclosure and HVAC design approaches Passive House buildings bring to the forefront due to the stringent set energy budgets. Our design approach and the management of this relationship will be explored through several case studies, ranging in size and typology.
Being part of Canada’s highly experienced Passive House professionals circle, Marine leads RDH’s Passive House consulting services on the East coast. She is one of the few Building Certifiers in North-America and joined RDH’s specialist team to focus on large-scale mixed-use projects. Her current efforts are on large student residences, leading the University of Toronto and Victoria student housing and dining projects. She focuses on the site delivery of high-performance buildings, having led repeatedly site teams unfamiliar with Passive House towards certification. The rest of her time is split between supporting Toronto implement their Zero-Emissions Buildings Framework and teaching in the Passive House community since 2013.

Of Course, a Passive House is Sustainable!

In 2018 the Danish institute GXN published a very instructive comparison of the ten most common sustainable construction labels in Denmark.. All together 45 global labels had been mentioned, but, as in other studies, the Passive House was completely missing. Following their open sourced methodology, based on criteria from DIN EN 15 643 Sustainable Buildings, Thilo Cunz compared the Passive House standard itself and a challenging PH project in Bremen (Germany) with LEED, BREEAM and DGNB. The result, presented at last years’ Passive House Conference in Germany, was not surprising: Of course, a Passive House is not energy efficient only, but sustainable as well. Sustainability is just not the focus of certification.
Thilo Cunz is a German architect, interested in energy efficient and sustainable construction. In international pilot projects across Europe and Asia he supported the German building materials industry (BASF) in developing ideas, products and markets for sustainable construction during the past decade. He shared his experiences on several international Green Building and Passive House conferences. Since 2019 he builds up the business for sustainable construction at WSP in Germany, a global acting engineering firm with around 50.000 employees worldwide, with headquarters located in Canada.
