April 2017 Dinner Meeting
Topic: Roofing Systems; major failings and resulting evolution of roofing system performance
Shelter has been a primary need of man. Quarried stone, slate, thatch and wood shingles have been around for 100's of years. The Evolution of roofing as a waterproofing system has a relativity short history and law suits involving roof failures have occurred with most roof systems.
This Presentation will highlight some of the major failures and introduce some of the changes made to improve a roofing systems performance. The presentation will include asphalt shingles, EPDM, TPO, Green Roof, Solar Panels, PVC, modified asphalt, and Built-up Roofing system.
A graduate of O.A.C., now known as the University Of Guelph, Douglas Fishburn RRO, GRP has over 40 years of building envelope, construction, and design experience. He is President of his Professional Engineering Firm, Fishburn Building Sciences Group Inc.
Mr. Fishburn is a member of the Ontario Building Envelope Council (OBEC),isapas President of the Ontario Chapter of the Roof Consultants Institute (RCI) and has held the position of Regional Director of RCI Inc. and is a member of the Education & Chapter Development Committee for RCI Inc. He was the author of the Chapter Development Handbook and was a principal author in developing the RCI Vegetative Roofing and Green Roofs for Healthy Cities Education programs. He also sits on a number of Canadian General Standard Board (CGSB) and the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) committees, which formalize standards for construction products.
