A Promise to Future Generations

What is "A Promise to Future Generations"?

The Promise to Future Generations is a student-driven initiative that was started in 2009 by a group of civil engineering students. It was adapted from a document written by Jacques Cousteau in the 1970’s entitled “Bill of Rights for Future Generations”. A Promise to Future Generations is a voluntary promise – an active choice made by citizens of the world who believe they have a duty to protect the rights of future generations to enjoy this bountiful earth. It challenges signatories to carefully consider the consequences of decisions made in both their personal and professional lives for future generations. Though this initiative began in the Department of Civil Engineering, we feel this is an important commitment for decision-makers, engineers and professionals across all disciplines. Those who choose to commit to this promise will do so alongside their peers in a Signing Ceremony.

The Signing Ceremony is where signatories formally commit to the values of the Promise with their peers in front of their friends and family. The inaugural signing ceremony was held on June 19, 2009 and had over 80 signatories. To date, the Promise group has held six signing ceremonies where over 400 graduating students, faculty, alumni, and industry representatives across many disciplines have participated. This year will mark the seventh annual signing ceremony!

Students, faculty, and industry representatives active in the Promise initiative will have the opportunity to attend exciting events that strive to put the Promise values into practice while also participating in discussions with their peers and previous signatories about current issues surrounding the protection of the rights of future generations. The act of signing the Promise is only the first step in this process. Signatories have an opportunity to join a community of like-minded colleagues to share innovative ideas, provide advice and encouragement through difficult decisions.

This year ALL graduating students and professors from across the University, as well as industry professionals who are passionate about this initiative are invited to join us in for the upcoming signing ceremony on June 15th, 2015. If you would like to join in the 2015 Promise signing ceremony or host a signing ceremony in your own organization, please contact us for more information:

Those who choose to commit to this promise will participate in a signing ceremony to declare the promise with like-minded peers and will have their name logged on the Promise Register.

Up to now, the Promise has been geared towards students in the final year of their undergraduate studies. However, we are encouraging university faculty, alumni and staff as well as members of industry to make this commitment as well and sign the Promise with the students. Everyone is welcome.
